The Moment We Knew it was Time to Dream Bigger

What started as a heartbreaking need became an answered prayer beyond what we imagined.

The intake team sat around the table, heartbroken. In January 2025, The Dwelling Place had just completed renovations on one of its five homes. Eleven bedrooms stood ready to welcome mothers and children seeking refuge from abuse. But there was only one spot available in childcare.

“We had to turn away mothers with children,” said Executive Director Jenna Perez. “We were founded on the vision of mothers and children healing together. It didn’t sit right with me.”

For years, The Dwelling Place’s housing capacity had steadily grown, reaching 32 bedrooms. But the programming space for children hadn’t kept pace. The team had creatively transformed a basement and garage into classrooms and play areas, but there was only room for 18 children. The Dwelling Place needed space for at least 40.

Basement and garage spaces were creatively used for children’s programming while mothers were in class and therapy.

“Oftentimes, these children are coming out of chaotic and traumatic environments,” said Jenna. “They need calm, open spaces where they can feel safe and reset their nervous systems.”

A program center had always been part of The Dwelling Place’s long-term vision. The team imagined it years down the road. But suddenly, it wasn’t a future dream. It was an urgent need.

The Dwelling Place needed a place where children could play and learn in peace. Where women could gather for classes and counseling. Where alumni could continue their healing journey. Where staff could work together under one roof to better serve families. The team began to pray.

“I sent our long wish list to our realtor,” said Jenna. “I thought maybe we’d find something in six months.” Thirty minutes later, an email appeared in her inbox. A beautiful building that checked every box. And it was only a five-minute drive from our homes. “I was blown away,” said Jenna.

One by one, God opened doors. Through the incredible generosity of donors, The Dwelling Place purchased the building completely debt-free. Then, God brought together hundreds of people, talents, and resources to transform an empty building into a sanctuary for healing. Today, families are restoring their lives after abuse within its walls.

Jenna said, “I think the impact is felt most strongly in the small, everyday moments.” It’s in the conversations that happen in the hallways. The dignity a mother feels as she drives with her child to a beautiful place created just for their healing. The sound of singing voices filling the chapel room. Saying ‘yes’ to a mother: We have space for you and your children. Come heal together.

The new Program Center has infant, toddler, Pre-K, and School-age classrooms, along with a playground and an indoor gross motor playroom.
